Jim McGee’s reading list for aspiring knowledge workers
I came across a good list of books for aspiring knowledge workers on Future Tense. It supplements a talk he gave at DePaul on the topic of “Knowledge worker effectiveness in organizations.”
McGee put the list together because, “if you want to improve your skills as a knowledge worker, you are pretty much confined to some form of self-directed learning strategy.”
The list’s focus skews towards high technology and Internet related work, but as McGee states it is a good starting point for anyone interested in improving their skills a knowledge worker. In particular I think it is a good list for people interested in becoming thought leaders or people who need to generate and communicate creative and innovative ideas. If you are an accountant or a lawyer (certainly knowledge workers) this list may not be as compelling.
With titles like “Secrets of Consulting: A Guide to Giving and Getting Advice Successfully” (Gerald M. Weinberg) and “Flawless Consulting: A Guide to Getting Your Expertise Used” (Peter Block) the list is also bent towards independents not members of an team or large organization. Although, one could always argue we should all view ourselves as independents or consultants.
To help me and other track our progress through the list I added it to List of Bests.
